Dorottya Rédai Gender in Education. A Democratic Transition. - Comparative Analysis of Issues the Reform Process Slovenian and Hungarian Education

The 1990s brought democratic transition to the countries of Central Eastern Europe - a still ongoing process, with specific social, economic and political challenges to be met in each country, including the reform of education. This book explores the educational reform process in Slovenia and Hungary from a gender perspective. A theoretical discussion of the relevance of gender in education is followed by a comparative analysis of the national curriculum reform and gender issues therein, the presence of gender in educational discourse, and the implications of the reforms for textbooks and teacher training in the two countries. The study is concluded by an assessment of the relative success of the reforms. Completed in 2003, the study covers an under-researched area, raises further questions and points towards potential research directions for scholars interested in gender and education in the CEE region. Recommendations are offered about elements of the Slovenian reform that could be adapted in Hungary to improve the curriculum and provide a context for discourse on gender in educational policies and practice, therefore the book is also of interest for educational decision-makers.

Tegegn B. Geribo Gender and Education

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: A, Atlantic International University (School of Human and Social Studies), language: English, abstract: AbstractEducation is universally recognized as playing role in sustainable social and economic development. Regardless of the ideology underlying approaches to development, education improves the quality of life; it improves health, expands access to paid employment, increases productivity in market and non-market work, and facilitates social and political participation. Because of these facts, the education of girls and women is therefore an important investment, despite the precarious economic contexts within which many countries have to provide for education. Gender refers to historical and sociological relationships between women and men. If development is seen as an attempt to raise the quality of life all citizen, gender in development works toward ensuring that the special needs of women with respect to those of men, are met in this process. However, significant gender inequalities exist in education sector. These inequalities are found not only in indicators which can be rapidly obtained from statistical sources such as literacy, enrolment, achievement and levels of schooling attained, but also in several other aspects of education which are of concern in the pursuit of gender equality and equity such as management personnel in decision-making roles, cur...

International Perspectives on Gender and Mathematics Education (PB)

A Volume in International Perspectives on Mathematics Education- Cognition, Equity & SocietySeries Editor Bharath Sriraman, The University of Montana and Lyn English, QueenslandUniversity of TechnologyWhy a book on gender issues in mathematics in the 21st century? Several factors have influenced theundertaking of this project by the editors. First, an international volume focusing on gender and mathematicshas not appeared since publication of papers emerging from the 1996 International Congress onMathematical Education (Keitel, 1998). Surely it was time for an updated look at this critical area ofmathematics education. Second, we have had lively discussion and working groups on gender issues atconferences of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education [PME] for the past fouryears, sessions at which stimulating and ground-breaking research has been discussed by participants from many different countries. Some publicationseemed essential to share this new knowledge emerging from a wider variety of countries and from different cultural perspectives. Third, some westerncountries such as Australia and the USA have experienced in recent years a focus on the "boy problem," with an underlying assumption that issues offemales and mathematics have been solved and are no longer worthy of interest. Thus it seemed timely to look more closely at the issue of gender andmathematics internationally. When the idea for this volume first emerged, invitations w...

Umar Daraz, Arab Naz The Educational Catastrophe

Education is the reconstruction of human experiences, development of man's faculty especially his/her mind (Aristotle). Conception of prosperity and development may be insatiable without quality education. Discrepancy in provision of education on gender basis has been a universal concern. Particularly societies based on traditionalism and customary law are found more prone towards gendered educational system. This book also emphasizes on gender issues with respect to education as gender and education are highly debated concerns in the present day of modernity. The empirical and secondary information collected to design this manuscript, patently elaborate that the centuries old customary law, patriarchic structure and male dominance prove as hurdles in the way of women's education. In addition, the poor economic conditions of the area add fuel to the fire along-with the discouraging communal response and numerous physical impediments intensify the educational apathy. The study has been conducted in a traditional Pakhtun society that is governed by its own normative structure prominently known as Pakhtunwali that is to a high extent regarded as hurdle to women's education.

Maria Victoria Dariano Exploring the Linkage between Gender, Energy and Development

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Women Studies / Gender Studies, University of the Philippines (Philippine Military Academy), course: Master of Arts in Social and Development Studies, language: English, abstract: The main concern in this paper is to address the question, what approaches could provide us with a convincing linkage between gender and energy? This research attempts to explore, therefore, the linkages among gender, energy and development.Women/gender and women's empowerment serve as core impetus in the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), however, gender fails to be viewed as a critical pathway in improving the performance and service delivery of energy sectors. It is in the same manner that energy is not widely viewed to be significant in addressing development issues such as women's education and employment, maternal health, child mortality rate, poverty, hunger, and even income. One reason could be the failure to perceive gender and energy as fuelling each other in a single development research and/or practice.

Palmer Rebecca L. Romani Exclusion in France

Social exclusion has affected the lives of Romanies for centuries. Today, this continues in France as well as in many other countries across Europe. A large obstacle for Romani inclusion in France has been the lack of education regarding Romani history, which has enabled stereotypes and misperceptions of the Romani communities to become prominent. Additionally, many Romanies have not received general education as is expected by the French norm, resulting in a disparity within education, which in turn has contributed to the social exclusion experienced by Romanies. To understand how Romanies are being excluded from the hegemonic French norms, the matters of education, employment, housing, mobility, deportations and gender are explored through means of first hand interviews and fieldwork conducted in Ille-et-Vilaine, supplemented by media reports and previous research publications regarding exclusion and Romanies.

Seid Yimer Returns to Education and Wage Differential

The book provides readers deep understanding and frontier of knowledge about analysis of gender wage gap and the economics of education. It consists of much state-of-the-art micro econometric techniques within the quantile regression framework to examine the effects of education on gender pay gap in two African countries. It is of interest to investigate the efficiency and distributional impacts of education as these are crucial topics for public policy making. In the book, the mathematics is more simplified and the different economic concepts and key topics in labor economics are discussed more precisely. The study pays particular attention to discuss the policy implications of the empirical findings of returns to education and the contribution of education to explain the gender pay gap across the wage distributions. Thus, identifying the target households for the placement of public spending is a central feature of the development process given the limited resources. The two persistent problems of endogeneity and sample selection are well controlled, which make the estimation more appealing.

How do students’ social identities, particularly their gender, influence their leadership practices and development? Using Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality as a framework, this volume discusses existing and emergent research on gender and leadership and offers key strategies and on how leadership educators can engage students in these topics and provide contemporary critical thinking on how gender and leadership inform one another. This volume examines: the ways intersectionality can be used as a lens for gender and leadership, key considerations for developing and advancing leadership among women, men, and trans* students, programs and experiences grounded in critical self-reflection and leadership learning among students of all genders, and opportunities for leadership educators to navigate topics of gender and leadership, emphasizing their own self-work and avenues for affecting positive change. Contributing scholars share examples that are developmentally appropriate for high school and college students. This work is designed with leadership educators in mind, emphasizing theory into practice and highlighting the ways that leadership and gender can promote holistic, transformative learning for all students. The Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Student Leadership explores leadership concepts and pedagogical topics of interest to high school and college leadership educators. Jennifer Douglas Like a Natural Woman Constructing Gender from Performance to Performativity

In this work, I promote a dialogue between Drama and Performance Studies concerning the performance of gender in everyday life and on the stage. While Judith Butler and others have argued that the performativity of gender must be examined outside of theatre, I argue that theatre can provide us with a unique lens through which to examine aspects of gender that can be overlooked in everyday life. The plays and performance art I have chosen highlight different modes of performing gender through representations of the female body, which introduce the tension between the discursively produced body and the lived, phenomenological body onstage. By exploring this tension, I argue that the performativity of gender onstage arises from a combination of words, the presentation of tangible bodies, and the audience's response to the stage action. I bring together iconic playwright Samuel Beckett with Cuban-American performance artist Ana Mendieta and Irish playwright Marina Carr in order to represent different modes of performance. This study should prove useful for scholars in theatre, performance studies, and gender studies, who are interested in examining gender in a theatrical context.

Upali Sedere .Feminization. of Teaching Profession in Sri Lanka

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: Krieg (2005) in his review of impact of teacher gender on student gender states that while a large body of research focuses on the gender of students, less research explores the impacts of a teacher's gender on students (Hopf & Hatzichristou 1999 ). Evidence suggests that male teachers tend to be more authoritative whereas female teachers tend to be more supportive and expressive (Meece, 1987 ). A survey of 20 teachers indicates that male teachers are likely to select a more aggressive disciplinary approach toward boys while teachers of either gender tended to ignore boys' disruptive behavior than that of girls when the behavior was not aggressive (Rodriguez, 2002). Krieg (2005) further reveals that researchers have found that teachers interact differently with students of similar gender than they do with students of opposite gender Einarsson, C., & Granström, K. (2002 ) This includes evidence suggesting disciplinary procedures and proclivity to discipline vary by both student and teacher gender. Likewise, a teacher's perception of student characteristics and abilities appear to systematically vary by gender. Other studies find male students benefit at the expense of female students in the amount and quality of interaction received from teachers of both genders. What has yet to be determined is how these differences in disciplin...

Gender and Schooling in the Early Years (PB)

In this volume, gender and schooling in the early years addresses a broad range of issues including, but not limited, to gender equity in education. We explore, for example, the complex world of play in Fromberg's chapter and are reminded that for young children, play involvesissues of power and hierarchy in ways that parallel the role of gender in society. Miletta's study of preschool children in northern Italy, atReggio Emilia, reveals a story of classroom interactions where gender differences are not part of the equation for the youngsters. Her chapterbegs the question, "How does this environment empower all children, regardless of gender?" Two chapters provide a lens to the Montessorisetting for young children. Wilgus studies the gendered patterns of young women teaching at a Montessori school, while Irby, Rodriguez, and Lara-Alecio explore the intersections of culture and gender at a bilingual Montessori public school. Further examining the preschoolyears, Plaster and Schiller address the current brain research and examine the ways in which the adults that staff early child care programs, and the environments that they offer, play an important role in the development of our children.

Since the dawn of history, folktales have been serving to pass didactic lessons to the audience to enlighten their mindset. However, this literary genre has started recently to lose its superficial role due to its inherent discursiveness in representing gender identity. Thus, the book in hand aims at scrutinizing the representation of gender dual dichotomy in folktales; this book is also written to provide the reader with a theoretical as well as an analytical insight on issues that concern gender as a social construct. To this very reason, a case study has been selected for exploring closely the various metaphorical aspects through which gender clash is depicted. For the critical study of this problematic theme, recourse to the feminist-based oppositional approach is suggested in this vein to fit into the requirements of our methodological analysis.

Women in school management positions, particularly principals of schools have a number of challenges, for example, they are caught in between work responsibilities and the role of being a mother and wife. Gender stereotypes makes the society look at women managers as uncapable of managing schools. Hence they sometimes tend to lose their identity as women in a male orientated field of school management. Therefore, they sometimes tend to grow muscles in an attempt to prove themselves as capable managers. Despite all their challenges, they still believe in effectively managing their schools through involving all the stakeholders that have interest in education matters in the decision making process. This strategy seemed more appropriate in promoting democratic participation in schools as stipulated in South African education policies.

There is a need to focus on what is actually happening within classrooms to alter gender disaggregated data in performance, retention, completion and transition. The teacher is the authority figure in the teaching and learning process. Hence, reforms of teaching practices should take initiatives that help teachers adopt gender responsive pedagogical approaches aimed at considering individual learner needs for improved teaching outcomes. This text is therefore based on an action research conducted in a rural East Africa. The research explored how a teacher could practically engaged in adopting a gender responsive pedagogy within a classroom in a secondary school setting. This is a composition of a detailed and well researched text that provides a deeper understanding of gender issues that teachers face during teaching and learning. It further provides an intensive literature review on the topic. The book has well structured and coherent chapters that will provide easy understanding of the text.

Sarah Höchst Gender Stereotyping in U.S. Print Advertisements

In contemporary society advertising is everywhere. Advertisement is always with us, no matter where we are. Although we are aware of the constant bombarding by advertisement everywhere we go, we hardly recognize the influence that it has on us. Thereby, advertising has a great influence on us as individuals and on society as a whole. Through the media, we make sense of our cultural identities, gender and sexuality. The central goal of this book is to examine the development of presentations of gender stereotypes in print advertisements over a time period of 40 years via content analysis of a sample of magazine advertisements. The key questions are: How do U.S. print advertisements construct gender stereotypes? How did these stereotypes develop and do they have an influence on the consumer and the U.S. culture? Content analysis has been proven in decades of research on gender stereotyping as it relates to mass media and because this is an appropriate method to not only focus on images, but also on verbal messages. Magazines present an especially enduring, popular medium, thus this study focuses on gender stereotypes in print advertisements of magazines. More specifically, it focuses on the magazines Cosmopolitan and Esquire due to the varying target audiences, and because they might be a potential indicator of U.S. magazine advertising in general. To further limit the object of investigation, this study concentrates on beauty product advertisements. From the text: - Gender studi...
